In our reference game tasks, we pair up players across the web in a real-time, multi-player environment where they must communicate to solve a problem. One player is assigned to be the speaker and the other is assigned to be the listener. On each trial, both players are presented with an array of objects, one of which is privately marked for the speaker as the target. The speaker must send messages through the provided chatbox to get the listener to choose the target from the lineup. Both players may use the chatbox at any time.

The corpora below contain the messages sent by both players on each trial, along with trial-level metadata about the context. Below are example trials used to create the Color Reference Dataset on the left, and the Tangrams Dataset on the right. For further technical details about the framework used to conduct these experiments, see: Hawkins, R.X.D (2015). Conducting real-time multiplayer experiments on the web.
